Field of research and issues addressedDuring the workshops Functional Translatology in Regional Contexts I (Berlin, 2021) and II (Vienna, 2022), the partner institutions established a framework for joint research in the field of translation studies. More precisely, we defined how specific translations can be used for the comparison of the five languages represented at the workshops (Hungarian, German, Polish, Czech and English). The workshops placed the translation of two historical essays and one novel in the foreground and focused on the use of various linguistic functions and the analysis of cultural, linguistic and practical conditions of translatability.
In the academic year 2023/24, we intend to continue this work and publish our results as a reader which discusses both practical and theoretical issues. At this stage, we aim to examine how the categories of translation analysis defined during the previous workshops can be used for audio-visual translation. We expect that studying the process of translating various film extracts from Hungarian into four different target languages (German, Polish, Czech and English) and analysing these translations will enable us to pinpoint specific structural differences between the analysed languages and the various translation strategies that have been applied.
What makes this research unique is both the number of analysed languages as well as the fact that there is only limited research both in the field of Translation Studies and the broader field of Comparative Linguistics which addresses the issue of audio-visual translation between languages where neither the source nor the target language is English.
Since audio-visual products have become a part of our daily life, audio-visual translation has also become an important and widespread way of connecting languages and cultures. It is therefore of particular importance to explore the criteria that allow to produce successful audio-visual translations in depth.
Specific research questions:
● What kind of transfer operations are needed in the analysed languages due to the constraints of the audio-visual translation mode?
● What kind of transfer operations are needed in the analysed languages to make the translation acceptable and understandable in the target language?
● What kind of transfer operations are needed in the analysed languages to make the translation acceptable and understandable in the target culture?
The product of the workshops will be a multilingual (and later expandable) reader on translative transfer operations. It will mainly focus on the new results from research conducted during the two workshops on audio-visual translation, and it will also take the results of previous workshops, especially the results of the analysis of literary translations from the last workshop, into account.
