Keynote Speech: Interprofessional Collaboration with Interpreter in Healthcare Contexts

Beschreibung

In our increasingly diverse and multicultural societies, effective communication
between healthcare professionals and patients is vital for the delivery of quality
care. However, one significant hurdle arises when patients and healthcare
providers do not share a common language. Language barriers are challenging
both for the healthcare professionals and for the patients, and can entail risks
and additional costs for the healthcare system e.g. due to misdiagnosis or missed
appointments (Angelelli, 2015, 92). In order to overcome such barriers, healthcare
professionals often rely on the help of language mediators such as family
members, friends or (non) medical staff members (Hoefert, 2008). They only
rarely resort to trained interpreters mainly due to lack of financial resources or
availability. Studies on healthcare interpreting (e.g. Angelelli, 2019) show that the
use of trained interpreters and collaborative teamwork with them help to build
trust and enable understanding. Like any other type of interprofessional
collaboration, successful and trust-based teamwork between healthcare
professionals and interpreters requires role clarity and an understanding of the
needs, the tasks and the action space of the respective other professional group.
In our presentation we will focus on interprofessional collaboration between
interpreters and healthcare professionals. After a brief introduction into the role
and activities performed by interpreters and the specifics of interpreting in
therapeutic contexts from an interpreter’s perspective, we will provide some
examples of interprofessional education based on literature (e.g. Woll et al.,
2020) and our experience with a small collaborative project comprising
interpreting students and speech therapy students in Vienna. By recognizing and
addressing these challenges, we can strive towards more inclusive and patient-
centered healthcare systems that better serve the needs of diverse populations.
