Lecture at SSPSSR - School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of KentAbstract: From the perspective of feminist visual sociology, this paper examines the dark gentleman's suit as an omnipresent element of political practice. For this purpose, three readings are applied in terms of viscourse analysis. Within the viscourse practice of the "dark gentleman's suit", the paper draws upon various knowledge bases which, in the act of communication, simultaneously reveal various ambiguities and ambivalences. Official and medially disseminated photographs of summit meetings form the beginning of the analysis. Subsequently the study uses diverse visual material to reflect on the deep-rooted meanings of the dark gentleman's suit. However, the line of argument goes beyond this context of fashion and highlights the ways in which the dark gentleman's suit may be seen as a global viscourse practice and as a crucial everyday element of structural and symbolic power in heteronormative societies.
