The lecture explores the question of whether and how the famous decree Haec sancta, the
interpretation of which was hotly debated at the Council of Basel, played a role in the debates at the
Council of Siena. The lecture argues that at Siena, there was no time, and perhaps no interest, in
ecclesiological debates of principle. Differences with regard to basic positions (papalist-conciliarist)
were not concealed, but neither were they systematically acted out. The politics of the Crown of
Aragon at Siena, which put pressure on Pope Martin V under the pretext of a continuing schism,
brought another dimension into play. Now, the focus shifted to the decree Frequens, but also Haec
sancta, which was posted anonymously on the cathedral doors of Siena. Finally, the lecture will
present two newly discovered sources, canonical-theological treatises by Petrus Donatus and
Dominicus de Sancto Geminiano authored at the Council of Siena, in which the authority and
validity of the Council of Constance was emphasized and defended.
