Abstract
The lunar cycle plays a critical role in the reproduction and lifecycles of many marine organisms, including algae, corals, worms and fishes. Little is known about how organisms respond to the lunar cycle at the genetic level, referred to as the circalunar clock. The Mari.Time project is building on the first gene positively identified as part of the circalunar clock, studying the mechanisms of circalunar clocks and their interaction with other rhythms and the environment. Using two model species, researchers will investigate how lunar light influences gene regulation and identify molecules involved in the circalunar clock, and then test lab-based results in natural settings.
