MDL’s primary goal was to make multimedia sources of information accessible to the Austrian Armed Forces. For the first time within the scope of Austrian security research efforts, the potential for integration of multimedia content into the analysis process of security relevant affairs was investigated. Building upon the existing infrastructure of the industrial partner, a prototype was developed, integrating multiple modalities of input sources in a variety of languages. The development of an automatic speech recognition component for Mandarin Chinese as well as the development of visual processing components to process text and faces visible on TV provide just two of the key accomplishments regarding the extension of technologies involved.

The prototype allows for the integration and combination of sources and modalities, analysis and visual analytics capabilities. The system allows experts to efficiently generate more realistic and high-quality situation reports in the face of critical situations. It supports relevant civilian, economic and security scenarios.

MDL was a joint effort of Sail Labs Technology AG (project-coordinator), Central Documentation of the Austrian Armed Forces, University of Vienna and the Technical University of Graz.
