Abstract

The project aims to explore the forms of intellectual exchange in the field of Slavic studies between the second half of the 19th c. and the Second World War. The joint Russian-Austrian team will research the diverse manifestations and importance that the cross-border interplay of this discipline has had and still has for the political, ideological, educational, and research-focussed discourses of the two countries. The primary focus will be on the period between the mid-19th, when the first Chair of Slavic studies was established at the University of Vienna, until the beginning of the World War II. With this focus, the project will facilitate the comparison of academic relations throughout a broad timeline (through the imperial, postimperial, Soviet, totalitarian eras). Sources only recently made accessible have called for Russian and Austrian experts to unite for the first time to explore the cross-border significance and development trends of
these relations. The innovative approach lies in the analytical and critically assessed overview of archive materials and letters, which have until now remained fully or partially unpublished, such as those by Vatroslav Jagic. Beyond this academic contribution, the project should throw light on the historical aspects of cultural and political cooperation of the two countries from the middle of the 19th century into the middle of the 20th century on the basis of these sources.
The use and evaluation of the scattered archive materials is still not without its obstacles. In light of these, our project aims to develop these records from Russian, Austrian, and other European collections: The St. Petersburg Branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the RAS Archive Moscow, the State Archive of the Russian Federation, the Austrian State Archive, the Department of Manuscripts of the Austrian National Library, and further archives in Prague, Brno and Zagreb among others, which no doubt lead to new connections. The members of the research team (amongst them Larisa Bondar, Fedor Poljakov, Stefan M. Newerkla, and Irina Tunkina) offer a wealth of experiences in archival work and complement each other in their philological and historical approaches to editorial techniques, critical commentaries, and classification into a wider conceptual framework.
The main expected result of the project is a scholarly publication of archival materials with extensive scholarly chapters, commenteries, indices etc.
