Abstract
Analysis of the Gosau Group (Upper Cretaceous-Paleogene) in eastern Austria and western Slovakia includes well data from the basement of the Vienna Basin. Palaeogeography, facies belts and provenance areas were evaluated based on core and outcrop data. Results include a new map of the eastern part of the Northern Calcareous Alps and the calcalpine basement of the Vienna Basin and 3D structural models of the Gosau synclines. Several palaeogeographic groups were distinguished from Austria to Slovakia. Group 1 comprises the Gießhübl Syncline on Bajuvaric Nappe units and the Brezová area. Group 2 includes mainly Tirolic units (i.e. Göller Nappe) and the Zavod area in Slovakia. Group 3 comprises the Glinzendorf Syncline, the Grünbach Syncline, and Slovakian wells; characteristic features are 2 transgressions (Santonian and Late Campanian). The Glinzendorf Syncline is identified as a distinct basin on the Göller Nappe, not directly connected to the Grünbach Syncline. Group 4 comprises a southernmost outcrop belt characterized by a late transgression in Late Campanian or Maastrichtian, and Paleocene shallow-water limestones.
