CAQDAS and the grounded theory method

The primary objective of this chapter is to provide a comprehensive step-by-step guide for researchers on the potential of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) programs such as NVivo, MAXQDA, or ATLAS.ti, and how such programs can assist in implementing the grounded theory method (GTM). Situated within Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory approach, the authors’ account uses ATLAS.ti as the prime exemplar. They begin with their methodological framework and consider the pros and cons of using CAQDAS tools with GTM. They then shift their discussion to how the second author used ATLAS.ti in her dissertation research, which was a qualitative study of discovery processes in academic writing. Through this explanation of how to implement GTM in CAQDAS, they seek to empower readers to better understand the potential and pitfalls of such software tools and foster better research planning and strategies.
