Abstract

Individual behaviour patterns affect health, mortality and the cost of health ser-vice delivery. For example, rising levels of obesity are associated with increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancers. In the UK, popu-lation prevalence of being overweight and obese is predicted to cost an additional £50 billion in health care costs by 2050 (Foresight, 2007). In this chapter we out-line an evidence-based appraoch to designing interventions to change individual health-related behaviour patterns that can potentially improve public health.
