Abstract
The letters from Aleksander Brückner to Miklosich report on the state and development of Slavic studies and linguistic ideas in the field in the late 19th century and show the role of Slavic studies in the political history of Central and Eastern Europe. They prove to be an essential source for analysing the networks of Slavists and academic and state institutions, which already had an international character at the time of Brückner and Miklosich. Placing the letters in their wider context also reveals the role of Slavic studies in the pragmatically designed project of the Short Dictionary of Six Slavic Languages.
