Exclusionary Environmentalism: Exploring Gender and Antifeminism in Far-Right Ecologisms

This study analyses far-right environmental communication in Germany, focusing on the “New Right” magazine Die Kehre and the neo-Nazi party Der III. Weg (2020–2023). A critical discourse analysis reveals that these actors rely on gendered narratives of environmental protection in that men are cast as hyper-masculine protectors of nature and nation, while women are tasked with ensuring the future of the Volk as well as of the natural environment through childbearing, caregiving, and overall preserving of tradition. This research exposes how the far right promotes “green” arguments to further an antifeminist agenda, draws attention to the problematic implications of “restoring” a “natural (gender) order,” and highlights how environmental issues are susceptible to far-right appropriation. Given this backdrop, this work contributes to the underexplored nexus of gender and far-right ecologisms, highlighting how these ideologies exploit naturalized narratives to perpetuate inequality and maintain traditional power dynamics.
