Abstract

What is social about social reading? Any reading process is social to some degree, and reading is far from being the solipsistic activity it is often purported to be. True to Bruns' statement that “[a]ll media are social, but only a particular subset of all media are fundamentally defined by their sociality” (2015: 1), there are clearly reading contexts that are “more social” than others, including reading groups (online and offline), educational contexts, literary events such as public readings and social media platforms like Goodreads, which are concerned with reading and responding to books online. They are part of what Murray (2018), in a recent study of the same title, has called “the digital literary sphere”, which includes the production, sale, reviewing and discussion of books.
