Abstract
One of the first preserved kalām writings is Ibn al-Layṯ’s letter to the Byzantine Emperor Constantine VI dating from the end of the eighth century. The letter’s polemics against Christian doctrine, in particular against the Divine sonship and the Trinity is presented as a typical example of early kalām’s preoccupation with the correct and rational application of speech.
