NOVELTY - Substituted benzoic acid compounds (I) or their salts or mixtures are new. USE - (I) are useful for: the prophylaxis and/or treatment of inflammation of the skin, and chronic inflammatory diseases, preferably bowel disease; reducing the release of TNF- alpha ; reducing the release of an interleukin (IL), preferably IL-1, IL-6 and/or IL-8; reducing the release of a prostaglandin, preferably prostaglandin E2; reducing the release of interferon- gamma and/or nuclear factor-kappa-B; strengthening damaged or undamaged skin; reducing tissue damage; recreating a normal cellular composition in the intestine; and/or recreating or stabilizing the function of skin. (I) are useful in a preparation, preferably a food or enjoyment preparation, a pharmaceutical preparation, a cosmetic preparation or a dermatological preparation (all claimed), where the pharmaceutical preparations are reconstituted preparations, preferably pharmaceuticals and medical products in the solid form e.g. tablets, capsules, granules, powder, suppositories and lozenges, liquid form solutions, suspensions, emulsions and syrups and semi-solid forms such as hydrophobic ointments, lipogels and silicone gels, and inhalants such as compressed gas metered dose inhalers, and powder inhalers.
