Abstract
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was used to account for the stabilization mechanism on the Zn-terminated surface. Five hydrothermally grown samples from different vendors with a polished (0001)-Zn face were used. STM images were recorded in the constant-current topographic mode at sample biases of +1.7 to +2.2 V and tunneling currents of 0.4 to 1.4 nA. Analysis revealed the presence of "rugged" topography of the ZnO(0001)-Zn surface due to electrostatics.
