Abstract

Despite progress in obesity treatment, prevention remains the best option to avoid associated comorbidities. The European Cluster of Obesity Research Projects (OBEClust) is a pan-European multidisciplinary network of obesity experts, linked to nine European Union-funded projects, aiming to enhance the collective effect of obesity research in Europe, with an emphasis on prevention.

When addressing obesity, single projects, even those that are based on multicentric, multidisciplinary and multinational consortia, often encounter methodological, ethical and political barriers that hinder their successful large-scale implementation and effect. Furthermore, obesity research and action must go beyond clinical care to better understand the different individual and environmental determinants of obesity. To approach obesity from a range of angles, eight projects were funded by the Horizon Europe Health programme, with one additional project funded by the Food, Bioeconomy Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment programme. These projects unite 28 different European countries and bring together €80 million in research funding from the European Union (EU), the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation and UK Research and Innovation under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee. In this context, the European Cluster of Obesity Research Projects (OBEClust) was established in mid-2024 to address potential barriers in obesity research, by creating synergies between these ongoing projects. By aligning methodologies, sharing expertise and collaborating on dissemination efforts, OBEClust aims to amplify the collective effect of its constituent projects. Through this collaborative framework, OBEClust seeks to capitalize on each project’s activities to strengthen Europe’s capacity to generate evidence-based solutions, produce science-based policies and facilitate implementation through sustainable strategies to prevent and manage obesity. Thus, OBEClust brings together nine EU-funded initiatives, which are listed in the following paragraphs, providing unique perspectives, focus points, methodologies and expertise to tackle the multifaceted challenge of obesity prevention and management. The projects that comprise OBEClust are supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme. BETTER4U: grant agreement 101080117. BIO-STREAMS: grant agreement 101080718. CoDiet: grant agreement 101084642, research activities taking place at Imperial College London and the University of Nottingham are supported by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) under the UK government’s Horizon Europe funding guarantee. eprObes: grant agreement 101080219.
