Abstract
This chapter focuses on the features of the observation method of research. It provides a general description of the method as well as its various uses, such as to describe aesthetics phenomena, test theory and specific hypotheses, and augment other research methods. The chapter also provides examples of empirical aesthetics research that have used observations as the primary means for collecting data with emphasis on observations conducted in natural contexts such as museums. Finally, these examples serve as a basis for offering guidelines on how to conduct observations that are appropriate, reliable, and valid.
