Planar vanadium oxide clusters: Two-dimensional evaporation and diffusion on Rh(111)

    Abstract

    The formation and diffusion properties of novel vanadium oxide cluster molecules on Rh(111) metal surface were observed. The cluster sources were ultathin ordered vanadium oxide nanostrutures on a Rh(111) surface, from which the production of clusters followed oxidative two-dimensional evaporation process. The high resolution electron microscopy (STM) and ab initio density functional theory were used to determined the struture, stoichmetry and physical nature of the formation process of planar V6O12 clusters molecules. The surface diffusion of V-oxide clusters and diffusion parameters indicated that the oxide clusters hop as entire units.
