Abstract
This article addresses the critical need to integrate digital skills into teacher training curricula, reflecting rapid global shifts in e.g. digitalization and access to information. It synthesizes insights from the Teaching Digital Thinking Project (TDT) and a working group on digital transformation in Bachelor of Education (BEd) programs, targeting program directors and curriculum developers aiming to embed foundational and emerging digital competencies into teacher education. Emphasizing both hands-on experience with digital educational technologies and critical reflection, the article advocates for a framework of "computational empowerment". Drawing on the DigComp 2.3 AT and DigComp Edu frameworks (EU and Austria), and the Frankfurt Triangle model, the recommendations prioritize competence areas over specific skills to address the evolving nature of digital education. The article suggests embedding digital literacy within pedagogical judgment, resilience, and lifelong learning to foster self-determined, adaptable educators.
