Soziale Herkunft, Leistung und Aspiration beim Übergang nach der Mittelschule in den Wiener Bezirken

Abstract

In this article, the primary and secondary social stratification effects on the decision regarding educational pathways after middle school (Mittelschule, MS) in Vienna are examined. The central focus is on identifying any additional social origin effects that may arise during the transition from the already homogenized MS milieu in terms of achievement and social origin. Furthermore, the study investigates whether these effects vary systematically across the districts of Vienna. Due to variations in provision of schools, the districts in Vienna differ significantly in terms of the percentage of students attending an MS at the lower secondary level or the academic secondary school. Through a secondary analysis of the panel data from the “Wege in die Zukunft” project, it is demonstrated that parental education, even from the MS level, significantly influences the transition to a school leading to the university entrance qualification (Matura). As the proportion of MS students decreases in a district, secondary effects of social origin gain importance independently of performance. Conversely, in districts with a high proportion of MS students, where student composition is more heterogeneous, the transition is primarily determined by performance-related factors. This corresponds more to the meritocratic ideal, which suggests that non-performance factors should not influence the chance of transition to upper secondary education.
