Abstract

This chapter is a case study in the formation of philosophical canons. The author focuses on the criteria that in early twentieth century, German-speaking philosophy could keep a philosopher out of the canon of ‘contemporary important philosophers deserving professional recognition’. The author’s case study is centred on Georg Simmel, though he briefly comments also on Edmund Husserl and Herrmann Cohen.
