Abstract
NOVELTY - Use of substituted 4-carboxyphenoxy compounds (I) for prophylaxing and/or treating inflammation, is claimed.
USE - (I) are useful: as a preparation such as a food or enjoyment preparation, a pharmaceutical preparation, a cosmetic preparation or a dermatological preparation; for prophylaxing and/or treating inflammation of the skin or chronic inflammatory diseases, strengthening damaged or undamaged skin, reducing tissue damage, recreating a normal cellular composition in the intestine, recreating or stabilizing the function of skin, and/or reducing the release of TNF- alpha , an interleukin, a prostaglandin, interferon- gamma and/or nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells; for treating animal or human skin (all claimed); as luxury consumable or drink; for treating, protecting and/or caring nails and/or hair and of the oral cavity (preferably gingiva and teeth); and in bakery products (e.g. bread, dry biscuits, cakes and other pastries), confectionery (e.g. chocolates, chocolate bar products, other products in bars, fruit gum, hard and soft caramels and chewing gum), alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks (e.g. coffee, tea, wine, wine-containing drinks, beer, beer-containing drinks, liqueurs, spirits, brandies, fruit-containing soft drinks, isotonic drinks, refreshment drinks, nectars, fruit and vegetable juices, and fruit or vegetable juice preparations), instant drinks (e.g. instant cocoa drinks, instant tea drinks and instant coffee drinks), meat products (e.g. ham, fresh banger or raw banger preparations and spiced or marinated fresh or pickled meat products), eggs or egg products (dried egg, egg white and egg yolk), cereal products (e.g. breakfast cereals, muesli bars, and prefermented prepared rice products), dairy products (e.g. milk drinks, milk-based ice cream, yoghurt, kefir, cream cheese, soft cheese, hard cheese, dried milk powder, whey, butter, buttermilk and partially or fully hydrolyzed milk protein-containing products), products from soya protein or other soya bean fractions e.g. soya milk and its products, soya lecithin-containing preparations, fermented products such as tofu or tempe or its product, soya sauces, fruit preparations (e.g. preserves, fruit-flavored ice cream, fruit sauces and fruit fillings), vegetable preparations (e.g. ketchup, sauces, dried vegetables, deep-frozen vegetables, prefermented vegetables, vegetables marinated in vinegar and preserved vegetables), nibbles (e.g. baked or fried potato crisps or potato dough products, bread dough products and maize- or peanut-based extruded products), fat and oil-based products or its emulsion (e.g. mayonnaise, remoulade, dressings and spice preparations), other ready-to-serve meals and soups (e.g. dried soups, instant soups and prefermented soups), and spices or spice mixtures, preferably seasonings which are used in the snacks field. The ability of (I) to reduce the release of interleukin-8 induced with 10 mu g/ml of lipopolysaccharide was tested in human gingival fibroblastic 1 cells using biological assay. The result showed that the cells incubated with 100 mu g/ml of erionic acid C for 6 hours exhibited interleukin-8 release of 0.67%, when compared to cells incubated with the control (10 mu g/ml of lipopolysaccharide) which exhibited interleukin-8 release of 98.91% for 6 hours.
ADVANTAGE - (I) exhibit excellent anti-inflammatory properties, support the natural defence mechanisms against inflammatory processes in physiological systems, occur in plants with a long edible consumption history (e.g. Herba Santa), and are capable of positively influencing inflammatory parameters in monocytes.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION - Use of substituted 4-carboxyphenoxy compounds (I) or their salts, mixtures, at least two different salts, at least one different compound or at least one different salt, for prophylaxing and/or treating inflammation, is claimed.
Either R1a = H or CH3;
R2a = organic residue with 5C and one O-atom or none; and
R3a = organic residue with 10C and at least one O; or
CR1aR2a = ring comprising 5C and one O or none.
