Abstract
The paper treats Max Scheler’s phenomenological account of religion and attempts to make it useful for the analysis of the situation of religion in the 21st century. It unfolds in four parts. The first part presents an analysis of the postsecular situation of today’s religion and philosophy of religion. This analysis forms the basis for the critical assessment of two recent accounts of religion in the second and the third parts of the paper, namely Julia Kristeva’s psychoanalytic and Bruno Latour’s sociological-existential accounts. On this basis, the final part intends to show that Scheler’s eidetic analysis is still valuable insofar as it provides an appropriate framing for understanding the postsecular situation of religion.
