Description

Heterogeneous nucleation is mediated by various physicochem-ical properties of the seed particle’s surface, i.e. charge state, wettability, solubility, shape and size (s. [1], [2]). Previous studieson NaCl seeds and mixtures of n-propanol and water report ade-creasing activation barrier (s. [3]).This study provides deeper insights into the dependence of hetero-geneous nucleation on the charge state, the nucleation temperatureand the relative humidity of the carrier gas. As a result fundamental mechanisms influencing the nucleation process can be linked to the change in the counting efficiencies of commercial Ultrafine Condensation Particle Counters (UCPCs).
