Going Sideways. Female Networks in Habsburg Diplomacy

Activity: Talks and presentationsTalk or oral contributionScience to Science

Description

The chosen title “going sideways” suggests to contemplate the female networks at the courts of Vienna and Madrid through a different lens, beyond the classical and recently strongly challenged dichotomy of formal vs. informal. The Spanish-Austrian negotiations and mediations of the courtly networks dominated by the Empress Maria of Austria will serve as a case study. The paper will argue that looking at those negotiations as an alternative and complementary path of diplomacy will help us to understand how those “sideways” were able to provide additional and resourceful options of conflict management between the two branches of the Casa de Austria.
