Moralities of Warfare - The New Focus on the Individual Soldier

Activity: Talks and presentationsTalk or oral contributionScience to Science

Description

In recent years, just war theory has been overhauled to a significant extent. In the 1970ies, the approach to just and unjust wars reasoned by Michael Walzer figured as a milestone in the ethics of war. Since then, the ethics of war has broadened and opened up new terrain in a variety of ways. In accordance with Herfried Münkler’s diagnosis of the completely new face of recent wars, including globalized economic wars and civil wars, the ethics of war concerns new scenarios of warfare. This talk is dedicated to one of the recent turns in just war theory, which is the moral framing of the actions of soldiers in the battlefield. In particular, the issue of whether or not soldiers are fully responsible for their often terrible actions has been raised. In addition, this talk inquires the perspective of the soldier in terms of his own morality.
