Nanoscaled Frequency Selective Limiter (FSLs) for 5G telecommunication

Description

Power limiters are crucial devices for protecting
electronics from large input signals causing overload and potential
destruction.
Historically, the first power limiters were ferrite-based, but as they
were bulky, they were later replaced by semiconductor-based power
limiters that enabled the miniaturisation of devices and are still used
today.
However, the semiconductor-based power limiter attenuates all the
signals equally regardless of their magnitude. On the other hand, the
ferrite-based limiter provides so-called frequency selective
attenuation, which means that the weak signal of interest at one
frequency is not attenuated, whereas the strong disruptive signal at
another frequency undergoes attenuation. This frequency selective
attenuation is especially of interest for GPS, as it allows for a much
better signal-to-noise ratio.
Moreover, compared to semiconductor-based power limiters, ferrite-based
limiters are passive, low cost, simple to design and allow operation in
the GHz
range. These properties of frequency-selective limiters, together with
the possibility of scaling them down, would be another step towards
speeding up the modern fifth-generation (5G) of digital communication
systems as it allows them to operate in the EU 5G high band (24.25GHz −
27.5GHz).
