Description
Although cyanobacteria are well known for photoautotrophy thereby releasing oxygen to the atmosphere, more and more strains have been discovered in the past to be facultative photo- or chemoheterotrophs . Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 can use glucose for photoheterotrophic and light activated chemoheterotrophic growth but is killed by low fructose concentrations. A mutant strain, which lacks the gene gtr encoding the glucose/fructose permease loses the capacity for glucose dependent heterotrophic growth, however, becomes resistant towards fructose. Recent experiments revealed that enormously high concentrations of fructose support mixotrophic and photoheterotrophic growth of the same strain . Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 gtr- takes up both fructose and glucose, however, the latter sugar does not stimulate heterotrophic growth. The current state of investigations indicates that fructose dependent growth is a matter of both uptake and metabolism. As a consequence fructose metabolism within Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 has to be further analysed.Period | 31 May 2020 |
