„ra-nuki won‘t do“ - Rakugo-ka as keepers of „proper“ Japanese?

Description

Any living, spoken language is in a constant process of change. Any change to what is considered “proper language” by the majority will likely be met with distrust and rejection. Other than for example Nō, Kabuki, Kyōgen or even Kōdan, Rakugo thrives upon the very fact that its language is down-to-earth – notwithstanding a large amount of premodern vocabulary in Koten Rakugo. In this paper I will try to explore how a story telling art can cope with changing linguistic realities and try to adapt without surrendering its linguistic idiosyncrasies.
