Robotics and artificial intelligence: Ethical and societal challenges

Activity: Talks and presentationsTalk or oral contributionScience to Science

Description

Abstract: Developments in robotics and neurotechnology promise to give us highly intelligent and much more autonomous machines than we have today, sometimes in close connection to humans and their brains. Visions of human-like robots and cyborgs, sometimes inspired by science-fiction, dominate the debate. There is fear and fascination. This talk argues against alarmism, but calls for more reflection on potential problems in the near-future. It gives an overview of some important and relatively urgent ethical and societal challenges raised by these projects and visions, with a focus on robotics and artificial intelligence. The talk also emphasizes the need for more policy making in this area, given that many issues are already relevant today with regard to smart devices and intelligent machines in home and work contexts.
