Description

Certain sites in specific sections of the ancient Roman province of Noricum, such as the fort and vicus of Favianis/Mautern a. d. Donau on the Danube Limes, have been the focus of ongoing archaeological investigations and have been processed accordingly. On the other hand, the archaeological knowledge about parts of the rural settlement in the hinterland of the Roman province needs an in-depth scientific treatment - this concerns especially the area located in today's province of Lower Austria. For this reason, the archaeological settlement activities of the rural hinterland of the ripa Norica as well as of the ancient municipium Aelium Cetium/St. Pölten in a precisely defined area of investigation in the northern area of this Roman province will be dealt with in the context of the dissertation project "Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum - Archaeological Investigations on Roman Settlement in the Hinterland of Northern Noricum" by Dominik Hagmann, which is currently running at the Department of Classical Archaeology of the University of Vienna. In the lecture in the context of the house colloquium first preliminary results of the PhD project will now be presented and critically examined: In the first part, the PhD project will be presented in general. In the second part, current theoretical as well as practical questions concerning the archaeological study of the rural landscape in the former Roman province of Noricum in the area of today's Lower and Upper Austria will be discussed on the basis of concrete, selected finds and features.
