School success factors at the end of secondary education - Insights from a large-scale longitudinal project in Austria

Activity: Talks and presentations › Talk or oral contribution › Science to Science

Description

Completing upper secondary education by taking the standardized school leaving examination is an important milestone for students' further (educational) careers. How well or poorly students perform in the examination is influenced by various factors at the student level, but also at class level (teaching, teacher) and school level. To be able to shape them positively, teachers and school administrators need to be aware of the most influential factors. In the presented research project, we therefore longitudinally explored which factors significantly influence school success at the end of secondary education in a sample of 30 Austrian general secondary schools. In this presentation, I will give an overview of the planning and conduction of the project, the most important results from the general project report and surprising results from (anonymized) school-specific reports. Additionally, I will present more fine-grained results from a recent publication that used the data from the project to examine the influence of autonomy-supportive teaching strategies on student motivation.
