Studying the Roman Rural Landscape at Northern Noricum: Materials, Methods, and Challenges

Activity: Talks and presentationsTalk or oral contributionScience to Science

Description

The talk discusses preliminary results of my PhD-thesis "Roman Rural Landscapes in Noricum: Archaeological Studies on Roman Settlements in the Hinterland of Northern Noricum". I may introduce the PhD-project and point out some theoretical and methodological issues regarding landscape and digital archaeology for the rural part of a former ancient Roman province in today's Austria. Further I will present some aspects and describe some characteristics of ancient settlements in that region (settlement patterns, site densities, site catchment etc.). I also want to think of issues regarding "senses" and "sensing" using e.g. least-cost- and visibiliy-analysis, so I may present some critical thoughts on the reconstruction of ancient Roman sensory experiences related e.g. to travel time or the visibility of certain archaeological features in the landscape too.
