Description
Direct measurements of total scattering by aerosol particles and of its angular distribution are important for climate-related studies. The Aurora 4000 polar nephelometer is a commercial integrating nephelometer by Ecotech. It measures the light scattered by aerosol particles for 17 ranges of the scattering angle. Limitations of integrating nephelometers are the impossibility to detect the light scattered in the extreme forward and backward directions (the truncation error), and the angular non-idealities of the light source. Therefore, data from integrating nephelometers must be corrected to obtain the aerosol total scattering coefficient. We performed a laboratory experiment in February 2019 with the overall aim to compare the different correction schemes available in literature (Anderson and Ogren,1998; Müller et al, 2011; Heintzenberg, 2006; Müller et al, 2012). Combining laboratory measurements of poly-disperse and monodisperse aerosol and simulations, we will show which correction has the least uncertainty.
