Description
In this paper, I examined the dimensions of linguistic self-awareness in three case studies of young Okinawan women. Three hour-long narrative interviews were coded and analyzed through a simplified CA model. The results indicated a feeling of "foreigness" caused by self- and partner perception during extend periods of work- or study related stays on mainland Japan on one hand, and a sense of loss with regard to the own disability to properly understand and speak Okinawan (i.e. their parent's or grand-parent's first language) on the other.
