Dr Angelos Angelakis currently serves the University of Vienna as an Assistant Professor in Accounting in the Department of Accounting, Innovation and Strategy. Initially, he joined the University of Vienna in January 2022 as a Research Assistant and Lecturer in Accounting. He is an accomplished academic and accounting professional with extensive experience across higher education, research, and industry. His research primarily explores the application and implications of International Accounting Standards (IAS), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), with particular interest in accounting digitalisation, the intersection of accounting and environmental economics, accounting education, whistleblowing policies, and issues of gender leadership and discrimination. He is committed to advancing impactful qualitative and mixed-methods research that informs both academic debates and public policy.

His professional background spans significant leadership and administrative roles in vocational education, as well as administrative and accounting positions in both public and non-profit organisations, and extensive experience in consultancy work as a licensed accountant and tax consultant. He completed his PhD in Accounting at the University of Sheffield, UK, where his doctoral work investigated the economic consequences of IAS 38 on managerial decision-making. He also holds an MSc in Informatics and Management and a BA in Economics from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. In recognition of his pedagogical excellence, he is a Certified Management & Business Educator (CMBE) from the Chartered Association of Business Schools, and also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in the UK.

His academic contributions include publications in peer-reviewed journals, such as Studies in Higher Education (AJG 3), book chapters in leading accounting texts, and several ongoing research projects with international collaborators. He has presented his work at major international conferences, including the British Academy of Management and the European Accounting Association. His research excellence has been recognised with awards including the University of Sheffield Research Award and the ICCMI Best Full Paper Award. Alongside his research, he is deeply engaged in teaching and mentoring. At the University of Vienna, he coordinates and co-teaches postgraduate courses in accounting and finance, and supervises master’s theses. He has also been nominated for a Teaching Award for Outstanding Teaching Performance.

He is a member of several professional bodies, including the British Academy of Management (BAM), the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA), the European Accounting Association (EAA), and the Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS). He is also actively involved in EU-funded research initiatives, most recently through the Horizon Europe project NOVEL2ZERO, which addresses urban environmental challenges through zero-pollution strategies.
