Current research project

The monastic necropolis of the Theban monastery of Paulos (Deir el-Bachît). Grave architecture and burial traditions between Late Antiquity and Early Islam.

The study of burial culture in Ancient Egypt, especially in the Pharaonic period, has a long tradition. Scholarly treatises on independent Christian grave forms and burial customs in Late Antiquity and the early Islamic period are still rare. The often well-preserved graves have been excavated in many cases (at least partially), but not always scientifically studied and evaluated. My dissertation project focuses on the well-documented necropolis of the monastery of Paulos in western Thebes and its development in the context of the local sacred topography.
