Abstract

DOCUMENTA Q 16 – Academic Abstract
Wider research context/theoretical framework
According to the Two Document Hypothesis, the Sayings Source Q is the second main source of the
Gospels of Matthew and Luke besides the Gospel of Mark. Q is reconstructed through a comparison of the
Gospels of Matthew and Luke in their non-Marcan material taking into consideration their editorial
tendencies. The reconstruction of Q uses the historical-critical methods, but also tries to integrate sociohistorical
and narrative observations.
Approach/methods
In 2000 the Critical Edition of Q (CEQ) was published. This reconstruction offers a possible – yet not the
only possible – reconstruction of the Sayings Source. In connection to this stands the project Documenta
Q, which presents the complete literature on the verses under scrutiny spanning over the last three
centuries (C19th to C21st) in 32 volumes. Twelve (of the in total 32) monographs have already been
published, ten volumes are “in preparation” (i.e., assigned to a special scholar). One volume “in preparation”
is the project herewith applied for, assigned to the applicant and described as: Q 16:13.16-18: God or
Mammon – Since John the Kingdom of God – No Serif of the Law to Fall – Divorce Leading to Adultery
(henceforth: Documenta Q 16).
Hypotheses/research questions/objectives
The high advantage of the Documenta Q Series is that the volumes do not opt for or against a special
reconstruction, but simply present the whole field of publications concerning the passage under discussion,
by providing an overview of three centuries. For each verse the CEQ has defined a strict frame of questions,
by naming variation units (diverging possibilities of reconstruction). The whole pertinent literature will be
listed according to this scheme, the most relevant passages are quoted literally.
Level of originality/innovation
The projected publication will be the first monograph on the research history of Q 16:13.16-18. Especially
the verses Q 16:16-18 are of high relevance concerning the question of the “parting of the ways” between
Jews and Christians and as to whether the community behind the Sayings Source has or has not yet
broken with their Jewish roots.
Primary researchers involved
The volume editor of Documenta Q 16 is Markus Tiwald, full professor for New Testament Exegesis at the
Faculty of Catholic Theology/University of Vienna (Austria). Before, he was full professor for New Testament
Exegesis at the Faculty of Humanities/University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany). There, he successfully
applied for five grants for international conferences at the DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), mostly
dealing with the Sayings Source. Via these projects, he is closely connected with the general editors of the
Documenta Q Series, Christoph Heil, Paul Hoffmann, John S. Kloppenborg, and Joseph Verheyden.
