Nanoscale spin-wave RF filters and multiplexers for 5G communication systems

Project: Research funding

Project Details

Abstract

Global mobile operators are spending some USD 160 billion every year to roll out faster 5G wireless systems. But in our crowded digital spectrum, they depend on radiofrequency (RF) filtering to keep out unwanted interference, and the higher bands used for 5G prevent traditional surface acoustic wave designs. The EU-funded 5G-Spin project hopes to offer a new alternative by using spin waves (SWs), the excitation of a spin system in a solid magnetic body, in lieu of acoustic ones. Building on previous EU research, the project will develop industry-ready SW-based RF filters and multiplexers that can be made with traditional photolithography and used for both mid- and high-band 5G systems.
