Abstract
From the previous (HERAS-funded) project “Lifestyle, Fitness and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Children and Adolescents” it became evident that there is a high prevalence of overweight and obesity, especially in 14 to 15-year-old boys in Kosovo, which is associated with worse physical performance [Tishukaj F. et al. (BMC Public Health, 2017)]. There is some evidence that an earlier onset of obesity and thus a greater lifetime exposure is associated with worse outcomes in cardio-metabolic risk factors such as hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. Therefore, the main project objectives will be (i) to determine the obesity- and physical fitness-related trajectory of the initially included cohort 8 years after the first assessments,
(ii) to adopt and evaluate online-questionnaires and telephone-based assessments of physical activity and nutritional status,
(iii) to train young and early stage researchers in research-based education in sport science and public health,
(iv) to disseminate the obtained data not only scientifically, but also to interested schools in rural and urban municipalities and the interested public to contribute to a knowledge-based society, and finally
(v) to promote local, regional and international scientific exchange.
In order to reach the above- mentioned objectives the following project activities will be implemented:
(i) Promoting the already existing scientific cooperation by regular formal and informal meetings of the project members
(ii) Evaluation of low-cost, but scientifically sound assessment tools for assessing physical (in)acivity and nutritional status
(iii) Conducting a follow-up study on the initial cohort of pupils (2013: n=354, age 14.5 ± 0.4 years, 45.4% female, 39.0% rural)
(iv) Presentation of the data on an international conference to increase visibility and to enhance transferable skills of the involved young scientists
(v) Joint-publication of the data in a peer-reviewed, Web-of-Science ranked journal
(vi) Organization of an info-event for knowledge-transfer to schools, municipalities, and the interested public to raise awareness
(vii) Organization of a regional final conference
