Abstract

The article gives a brief chronological overview of the political decisions and state measures in Austria during the survey period (March to June 2020). In addition, the (re)actions of the Protestant and Catholic churches during this period are presented. It can be seen that the religious communities in Austria, led by the Roman Catholic Church, showed solidarity for the government’s measures. However, this led to a massive break with tradition, especially in the environment of the Holy Week and Easter liturgies, leading to the development of new forms at the grassroots level: digitalisation offensives and the creation of online offerings, new and creative forms of pastoral care, but also decentralised liturgies, initiated and accompanied by both Church staff and voluntary workers.
