A dual hub-and-spoke problem with fixed and flexible long-hauls

Publications: Contribution to conferencePaperPeer Reviewed

Abstract

This work introduces a logistical problem occurring in and between two clusters (cities), where packages have to be transported between those cities. Within a city they are transported by small short-haul (SH) vehicles, while inter-city transport is handled by long-haul (LH) vehicles (train, plane or truck) that operate either on a fixed or on a flexible schedule. We propose a hybrid solution approach based on the savings algorithm, the pilot method and a commercial MIP solver. Preliminary
computational results are presented and future extensions of the problem formulation and the solution method are discussed.
