Abstract
The lead content was measured in shells from early-bronzeagefreshwater mussels Unio crassus, which originated fromStillfried an der March, Lower Austria. The mean value of 10samples was 0.053 μg/g Pb in dry mass. This value is wellcomparable to Pb levels in recent shells of freshwater musselsfrom unpolluted surface waters. This shows the relativelow bioavailability of lead in sediments, as the Pb levels inearly bronze-age are probably well comparable to recent»background« values.
