Citizenship Education as a relational practice

Publications: Contribution to bookChapterPeer Reviewed

Abstract

The preconditions for active citizenship are seen in positive experiences of recognition, trust, respect and confidence, which can help young people to develop their individual agency. This chapter discusses the concept of citizenship as practice, i.e. active citizenship. This is followed by an excursus on heterogeneity and diversity in democracy education in order to refer back, finally, to the approach of inclusive citizenship education. The chapter deals with different outlines and thoughts on democracy education through interaction and contact between individuals with different social group affiliations, i.e. on citizenship as a relational practice. The chosen case study of 1:1 mentoring for primary school children with migration or refugee biographies serves as an example for educational projects at the interface between formal and non-formal education, as a subject-oriented and everyday world-oriented educational project — possibly for inclusion and participation.
