Abstract
The study intends to offer a critical comment of the common study of the Saint Irenaeus Joint Orthodox-Catholic Working Group “Serving Communion. Re-thinking the Relationship between Primacy and Synodality”. The author emphasizes that the hermeneutic issue and the emphasis on the historicity of theology are among the most original elements of the study; both are representing a welcome stimulation for the future dialogue. He also appreciates the study for its theological complexity and underlines the uniqueness of the common reading of the historical-theological context of the First Vatican Council. At the same time, among other things, it is critically suggested, that the magic formula after Ravenna 2006 (Catholics need more synodality, Orthodox more primacy) will not bring the hoped breakthrough in Orthodox-Catholic dialogue, because Roman Catholic theology sees papal primacy as a theological issue, while the Orthodox as a structural-canonical question. The challenge of the future will be not to achieve “harmony” between primacy and synodality, but to reflect together whether the Petrine ministry belongs to the essence of Church unity or not.
