Abstract
The chapter describes the basic elements of this view and shows how compatible it is with the tenets underlying naturalist approaches to the study of language. It also shows how conceptualizations of languages as evolutionary systems have motivated the productive adoption in language studies of analytic methods that were first developed for the study of other evolutionary systems, such as, particularly, biological life. The chapter concludes with an outlook sketching the potential of a research programme that integrates Naturalist and Evolutionary approaches to the study of language.
