Abstract

The audiovisual imaginary reflects a variety of perspectives, depending on the country, the region, the urban or rural environment. In this context, digitalization is not only considered as a memory technology, but also as a metaphor for technical progress that affects the conditions of artistic creativity. Based on the short story “El Sur” by Jorge Luis Borges, the South is interpreted as a narrative machine, as a representation of the past and the future, as a threat and a promise. Borges thus anticipates the artistic and political consequences of the digitalization of film and television. In the area of the politique des auteurs, the example of the New Argentine Cinema shows that filmmakers of the South are subordinate to the demands of the film festivals in the north. In the area of television series, examples inside and outside the Hispanic sphere illustrate that tourism and rural life continue to transmit hegemonic ideas about the South.
