Abstract
In this article it is my intention to reflect upon some aspects of thought of three prominent figures in the history and anthropology of religions of the 20th century: Mircea Eliade, Ernesto de Martino and Claude Lévi-Strauss.
I believe that these aspects have not been thoroughly explored by other critics and historiographers. This is one of the reasons why I have decided to publish this piece of writing.
The paper sets out to discuss the criticism that de Martino and Eliade directed towards each other after the publication of two of their most important books: Il mondo magico (1948) and Le Chamanisme et les techniques archaïques de l’extase (1951). I will then also attempt to examine and compare some traits of the theories and methods developed by the aforementioned three thinkers in order to shed light on and explore some philosophical affinities that subsist, in my opinion, between them. I will do so by analysing their reflections and conclusions about magic and shamanism.
In questo scritto rifletto su alcuni aspetti del pensiero di tre coetanei maestri degli studi storico-antropologici delle religioni del ‘900: Mircea Eliade, Ernesto de Martino e Claude Lévi-Strauss.
Il fatto che questi aspetti non siano stati, a mio avviso, particolarmente visitati dalla storiografia critica su questi studiosi costituisce una delle ragioni che mi hanno spinto a pubblicare questo contributo.
Il testo prende le mosse da una discussione sulle critiche che de Martino ed Eliade rivolsero l’un l’altro all’indomani della pubblicazione di due tra i loro libri più importanti: Il mondo magico (1948) e Le Chamanisme et les techniques archaïques de l’extase (1951). Prendo in seguito in esame, comparandoli, alcuni tratti delle teorie e dei metodi sviluppati dai tre pensatori summenzionati, per poi mettere in luce ed esplorare alcune affinità filosofiche che credo sussistano tra loro, e che possono essere individuate a partire dalle riflessioni e conclusioni di questi studiosi sulle pratiche magiche e sciamaniche.
