    Abstract

The use of resonant beam technique in determining the elastic moduli of isotropic materials is discussed. Both the shear and the rotary inertia perturb the classical one dimensional Euler-Bernoulli theory for the flexural vibrations of elastic beams and lead to a shift of the resonance frequencies. The shear correction factor introduced by Hutchinson is a significant improvement over other methods although this might not affect the measurements of materials with low Poisson's ratio or of specimens with a square cross section.
